Bring & Brag May 2024 Entries and Winners

The category for the Bring and Brag contest in May was Bridges and Trestles. Assistant Bring 'n' Brag chair Dominic Martinelli filled in for Bring’n’Brag chair Rick Terek last month at the Ohio Valley Lines Model Railroad Club. Four members brought entries (two physical models and two photos) for the competition. Interestingly, the models also were built in three different scales: N—HO—O, the winners were as follows:

1st place went to Rick Montgomery for his entry of the Midriver Junction Columbus and Lakeshore Railroad bridge. The MJC&L is Rick’s freelanced model railroad in HO scale, and he is also active in Division Two’s (HO scale) FreeMo group.

2nd place went to Tom Catalano for his entry of triple crossing bridges in N scale, which he could conveniently display because the bridges are mounted on his T-Trak (N scale) module. His model depicts the “triple crossing” in Richmond, VA of three railroads — the C&O on the uppermost trestle, the Seaboard System on the middle bridge, above the street-running Southern Railroad. Tom recreated in this scene from a prototype photo that he also brought with the module. One wonders how the mating modules look (and how many would be required to complete the scene).

3rd place went to Neal Schorr for his entry of three stone bridges he built for his PRR Middle Division layout (O scale). Because they are permanently mounted on his layout, Neal brought photos he took of the three models, which he also provided for the Flyer. Each of his three bridges represent different engineering characteristics: tangent, curved, and skewed.

One additional entry was submitted for the May contest Bridges and Trestles.

Bill DeFoe brought a photo of his scratch-built high trestle named the “Cinder Valley #10 Crossing.” He refers to this as a “John Allen Bridge,” and it no longer exists due to demolition. He hand-fabricated and soldered brass diagonals & chords, and built the bridge and piers using styrene. He photoshopped the smoke and steam on his original image (cropped for publication).
